NSERC Summer Student Position (2006)

"Top Quark Physics with the Collider Detector at Fermilab "

Prof. Pekka Sinervo

pekka.sinervo@utoronto.ca

The Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) experiment is currently collecting and analyzing data on the very highest energy matter-antimatter collisions ever observed. The Toronto-CDF group is involved in several measurements related to the production and decay of top quarks in these collisions. These include a precision measurement of the top quark mass, the study of the production mechanisms for top quarks and a search for new particles being produced in association with top quarks.

The group has an opening for a summer student position to participate in these studies. In particular, the student will be involved in the development of techniques to further improve what is now the world's most accurate measurement of the top quark mass. One or two field trips to Fermilab may be necessary over the course of the summer to meet other collaborators working on related topics.

This position is open to students at any level, though there will be a preference for students how have completed at least two years of undergraduate study. Some programming experience in c++ or a related language and familiarlity with the linux operation system would be helpful.
