Searching for Dark Matter and Extra Dimensions with ATLAS The ATLAS experiment will soon be collecting and analyzing data at the highest energy collisions ever observed. The Toronto-ATLAS group is involved in searches for dark matter candidates and for evidence of extra dimensions. In both cases, the analyses involve looking for events where momentum is apparently not conserved. The summer student will participate in preparations for these analyses. In particular, the student will be involved in the development of methods used to calculate one of the Standard Model backgrounds to these searches. This work will involve writing software to perform the background calculations. Some prior programming experience in C, C++ or a related language and familiarity with the linux operation system will prove helpful.
