PHY 140Y FALL TERM - INFORMATION

PHY 140Y FALL TERM - OVERHEADS

Here are copies of most of the overhead transparencies used in the lectures. These will be supplemented by additional material, overheads, examples, and demonstrations in class. These overheads will be provided in two sets: Sections I, II, and III at the start of term, and Sections IV, V, and VI in the middle of term. Rather than printing out all of these pages, you can purchase each set from Scholar House Productions, 455 Spadina Avenue, Suite 209, telephone: 977-9641. The first set (three-hole punched) will be available at Scholar House Productions on Wednesday September 15, for $11. The second set will be available on Thursday October 21 for a similar price.

PHY 140Y FALL TERM - TUTORIAL PROBLEMS

There will be twelve sets of tutorial questions in the Fall term. These are intended to help you apply the lecture material to solving problems, and will not be marked. They will be handed out in your tutorial session one week in advance of when they will be reviewed in the tutorials. This will allow you to try solving the problems on your own first.

PHY 140Y FALL TERM - PROBLEM SETS

There will be four problem sets in the Fall term. These will consist of 8 to 10 questions: 50% will be awarded for making a reasonable attempt at all problems and 50% will be awarded for a selected 3 or 4 of the problems. Marks will be given for workings and units, as well as for final answers. The problem sets will be handed out in class on Fridays (Sept. 24, Oct. 8, Nov. 5, and Nov. 19), and they will be due in class on the second Thursday thereafter ( i.e., Oct. 7, Oct. 21, Nov. 18, and Dec. 2). They will be marked by your tutor and will be handed back in your tutorial session on the Monday or Tuesday immediately after the Thursday due date. This will ensure that you have the marked problem sets back before the two term tests. You may hand the problem sets in late to Prof. Strong (room MP710A) and incur a late penalty of 5 marks/day (which also applies to weekend days!). Late problem sets will not be accepted after they have been returned to other students, so the absolute deadline for problem sets is 1:00 PM on Mondays in room MP710A ( i.e., Oct. 11, Oct. 25, Nov. 22, and Dec. 6).

PHY 140Y FALL TERM - TESTS

There will be two tests in the Fall term. These will consist of some short answer questions (definitions, explanations) and some calculations (similar to questions in the problem sets and tutorials). There will not be any multiple choice questions. There will be no choice of questions - all questions must be answered. Marks will be given for workings and units, as well as for final answers. Calculators (preferably non-programmable) may be used. The term tests will be closed book - no aid sheets will be allowed and none will be provided.

PHY 140Y FALL 1998 - ARCHIVE

Here are the problem sets and tests from the Fall 1998 term. The questions listed in the problem sets refer to the Second Edition (1995) of Physics with Modern Physics by Wolfson and Pasachoff, which is available on short term loan in the Physics and Gerstein Libraries. You may also find the two test library web sites useful, not just for PHY 140...
