NSERC Summer Student Position (2005)

"Search for Dark Matter and Extra Dimensions with the Collider Detector at Fermilab "

Prof. Pierre Savard

savard@physics.utoronto.ca

The Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) experiment is currently collecting and analyzing data on the very highest energy matter-antimatter collisions ever observed. The Toronto-CDF group is involved in searches for dark matter candidates and for evidence of large extra dimensions of space.  In both cases, the analyses involve looking for events where momentum is apparently not conserved.

The group has an opening for a summer student position to participate in these analyses. In particular, the student will be involved in the creation, validation and study of the large-scale simulated event samples that will be created with the Big Mac Beowulf cluster at Toronto, and will work closely with the Toronto researchers involved in these studies. One or two field trips to Fermilab may be necessary over the course of the summer to meet other collaborators working on related topics.

This position is open to students at any level, though there will be a preference for students who have completed at least two years of undergraduate study. Some programming experience in C, C++ or a related language and familiarity with the linux operation system would be helpful.
